It lies on the edge of the Rhoen Mountains in northern Bavaria, near the borders of Thuringia and Hesse. The moated castle is situated in the valley of the Streu, a river that winds its way along the Rhoen. The Streu feeds an artificial stream that supplies the castle moat. This stream also formerly powered the two mills.

The history of the castle dates back to the Early Middle Ages. Each century left its mark, visible in the various construction phases. Today, Unsleben moated castle is a blend of styles that come together to form a cohesive whole.
